WORKSHOP: M2
Shibari: History, Culture, and Tradition
(Samstag: 16.30 bis 17.30)

A workshop dedicated to the history of Shibari, where we explore the origins of this practice
and its evolution over time. Starting from the ancient Japanese hojojutsu techniques used for
capture and restraint, to its transformation into an artistic and intimate form of expression,
the key moments that shaped Shibari into what it is today will be analyzed. The workshop
will include a reflection on Japanese culture, the aesthetic and spiritual influences that have
shaped this tradition, and how Shibari has been reinterpreted and adapted in contemporary
contexts, while still preserving its historical roots.

This workshop is dedicated to those who wish to  understand the history, evolution, and deep meaning of Shibari, a practice that, to those unfamiliar with it, might seem like just a series of rope-tying techniques, but in reality, it is much more. Shibari has ancient roots that extend deep into Japanese history and culture, and over the centuries, it has transformed from a military technique into a form of art and intimacy.
Our journey begins with hojojutsu, a martial discipline used by samurai to capture, immobilize, and restrain prisoners. It continues through its development in adult
entertainment and its transition into an art form and performance. This process of transformation led to the birth of the Shibari we know today, an evolution that has turned rope bondage into a form of creative and emotional expression.
In the workshop, we will explore how Shibari developed throughout the 20th century, becoming not only an aesthetic practice but also a profoundly intimate one. Tying is no longer just a tool for control but a means through which two people can enter into a deep connection based on trust, vulnerability, and mutual care. We will see how artists and practitioners have reinterpreted and adapted Shibari in various contemporary contexts, from visual art to BDSM, while still respecting its historical and spiritual origins.
This historical journey will also allow us to reflect on broader aspects of Japanese culture, such as the relationship with the body, the aesthetics of minimalism, and the search for harmony in forms. We will discover how these principles have influenced Shibari, transforming ropes into a tool for creating beauty and exploring the relationship between the person tying and the one being tied.
Finally, we will discuss how Shibari has been embraced in the modern world, particularly in the West, and how it has become a global practice. We will examine the cultural differences and reinterpretations that have allowed this tradition to adapt to new sensitivities and
contexts, without losing respect for its deep historical and cultural heritage.
In summary, this workshop is not just a technical introduction to Shibari but an immersion into its cultural and historical soul, offering a deeper understanding of how this practice has evolved over the centuries, shifting from a tool of control to a form of art and intimacy.
